The School of Foreign Languages of Wuhan Institute of Technology (WIT) was established in 2000. It currently hosts one national-level experimental zone and comprises six teaching units: the English Department, the Department of Chinese International Education, the MTI Teaching Division, the Minor Languages Teaching Division, the Department of Foreign Languages for Non-Majors (Postgraduate), and the College English Teaching Division. It also houses four research institutes: the Interdisciplinary Translation Research Center, the Institute of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Foreign Languages, the Institute of Comparative Studies of Chinese and Foreign Language & Literature, and the Institute of Cross-Cultural and Area Studies. The School is equipped with advanced teaching and research platforms and facilities, including an Intelligent Teaching Technology Center, an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, multimedia language labs, smart audio-visual discussion rooms, a simultaneous interpretation lab, a translation lab, a resource room, and a multimodal recording and broadcasting studio.

Adhering to the New Liberal Arts education philosophy in the new era, the School leverages platforms such as the National Talent Cultivation Model Innovation Experimental Zone—the “E+” Dual Major Integrated Talent Cultivation Model Innovation Experimental Zone, the Hubei Provincial Key (Fostering) Discipline—the First-Level Discipline of Foreign Language and Literature, the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) Professional Degree Authorization, the First-Level Discipline Master’s Program in Foreign Language and Literature, the Hubei Province “Jingchu Excellence Program” Teacher Team, the Hubei Provincial University-Level Teaching Team—the “E+” Dual Major Integrated Teaching Team, and the Hubei Provincial First-Class Major “English Language and Literature”. It cultivates undergraduates in English, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and “E+” dual majors, as well as postgraduates in the MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) program and various research directions under the first-level discipline of Foreign Language and Literature. The “E+” Experimental Zone offers programs including English (with a minor in Marketing <Digital Marketing Direction>), English (with a minor in Law), English (with a minor in Software Engineering), English (with a minor in International Trade), English (with a minor in E-Commerce <Cross-Border E-Commerce Direction>), English (with a minor in Digital Economy), English (with a minor in Communication Engineering), Accounting (with a minor in English), Chemical Engineering and Technology (with a minor in English), and Material Chemistry (with a minor in English).

The School currently has 109 faculty and staff members, including 98 full-time teachers, 10 professors, 47 associate professors, and 30 holders of doctoral degrees. Among the full-time teachers, there is 1 Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions in Hubei Province, 4 candidates selected for the Hubei New Century 121 High-level Talent Program, 1 Outstanding Young Social Science Scholar of Hubei Province, 1 Provincial Young Core Faculty Member, 1 WIT Distinguished Talent, 1 WIT Excellent Talent, and 6 WIT Teaching Masters. Most faculty members have conducted teaching exchanges, visits, or research studies in countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, and France. The School has appointed several doctoral supervisors from renowned domestic and international universities like the University of Sydney and Beijing Foreign Studies University as guest professors, and has also invited experts from enterprises and research institutes to serve as off-campus practice supervisors and innovation/entrepreneurship mentors. Additionally, the School regularly invites domestic and international scholars and experts for academic exchanges and lectures.

Through years of disciplinary development, the School has formed a reasonable academic team in terms of age, educational background, and professional title. In recent years, the School has undertaken 5 National Social Science Fund projects, 3 Humanities and Social Science projects of the Ministry of Education, 2 National Education Science Planning projects, 1 Foreign Language Special Project of the National Education Science Planning Program, 3 projects of the National Committee for the Guidance of Translation Postgraduate Education, and over 30 provincial/ministerial scientific research and teaching research projects. It has also conducted over 50 projects in cooperation with enterprises and institutions. Faculty have published more than 70 papers in SSCI, A&HCI, and CSSCI journals such as Discourse Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies of Literature, Journal of Linguistics, Chinese Translators Journal, Foreign Literature Studies, Foreign Languages and Their Teaching, and Technology Enhanced Foreign Language Education. They have won nearly 20 provincial/department-level scientific research and teaching achievement awards and have published over 20 books, textbooks, and translations. The School has achieved significant teaching outcomes, including the approval of 1 National First-Class Course, 1 Provincial Course Ideology and Politics Famous Teaching Team, and 6 Provincial First-Class Courses. Teachers have won numerous awards in national and provincial teaching competitions, including the First Prize in the National College English Teachers’ Basic Teaching Skills Competition Finals, the First Prize in the Hubei Division of the National Foreign Language Teaching Competition for Universities, the First Prize in the “SFLEP Cup” Teaching Competition, the First Prize in the “FLTRP Cup Teaching Star” Competition, among others.

In 2009, the “E+” Dual Major Integrated Talent Cultivation Model was approved as a National Talent Cultivation Model Innovation Experimental Zone by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. As the leading unit of this experimental zone, the School, in collaboration with related schools, has won 1 Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, multiple First, Second, and Third Prizes in the 7th, 8th, and 9th Hubei Provincial Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards, the China Chemical Education Scientific Research Achievement Award and Paper Award, as well as the WIT Teaching Achievement Grand Prize and First Prize, among other honors.

The School consistently adhere to the philosophy of “For All Students, For All Aspects of Students, All for the Students”, focusing on comprehensively educating, guiding, and serving students’ growth and success. Dozens of students receive honors each year, such as the National Scholarship, National Endeavor Scholarship, Hubei Provincial Government Scholarship, Hubei Provincial Advanced Individual in Social Practice, and Hubei Provincial Merit Student. In recent years, one student was recognized as a National Role Model for College Student Employment and Entrepreneurship in the 5th “Shining Days – What Youth Should Look Like” campaign, two students were awarded the “Yangtze River Scholar” title in Hubei Province, two students were recognized as “Hubei Aspiring and Virtuous Youth”, and one student won the gold medal for lecturer in Hubei's Student Lecture Series.

In recent years, students have achieved outstanding results in high-level academic competitions. They won 1 Gold Award in the 2025 China International College Students’ Innovation Competition (Main Track) National Finals. They have also secured over 60 first prizes in competitions such as the Han Suyin International Translation Competition, the “FLTRP Cup” National English Speech Contest for College Students, the National English Debating Competition, the National English Writing Competition for College Students, the “SFLEP Cup” Hubei Provincial College Students Cross-Cultural Competence Contest, the Hubei Provincial Translation Competition, the Hubei Provincial English Speech Contest, and the Cross-Strait Interpreting Competition. Additionally, they won the Silver Award in the 7th Hubei Provincial “Challenge Cup” Undergraduate Business Plan Competition and the Third Prize in the 8th Hubei Provincial “Challenge Cup” Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition.

The School’s “Yu Ni Tong Xing”(“Language With You”) Volunteer Service Team has received 1 national honor as an Outstanding National “San Xia Xiang”(Summer Social Practice Program on Culture, Science and Technology, and Public Health for College Students) Social Practice Team and 2 provincial honors. It also won the Outstanding Practice Report Achievement Award in the 2023 “Colorful Guizhou” National “San Xia Xiang” Social Practice Special Program. The team has been approved as key practice teams including the National College Student Mandarin Promotion Practice Team, the Hubei Provincial “Joint Creation, Youth Assistance” Key Practice Team, and the “Colorful Guizhou” Special Practice Team.

Students who are recommended admission to master’s degree programs without taking the postgraduate entrance examination, those admitted through entrance exams, and those studying abroad are typically enrolled in domestic “Double First-Class” universities or prestigious international institutions. The School actively mobilizes various resources, conducts visits to enterprises to expand internship and job opportunities, engages in deep school-enterprise cooperation, and implements the “Employment Care Initiative”, so as to provide students with comprehensive employment services.
